Oral semaglutide administration in patients with type 2 diabetes significantly reduces body weight, HbA1c, and total cholesterol within 3-6 months, with additional systolic blood pressure reduction observed by 6-12 months.

If you have Type 2 Diabetes, oral semaglutide can significantly improve your weight, blood sugar (HbA1c), and cholesterol levels within the first 6 months, with blood pressure improvements continuing up to a year. While gastrointestinal side effects like nausea are common and may lead some to stop the medication, serious safety issues were not observed in this real-world study. It serves as a viable alternative to injectable GLP-1s, particularly for those who prefer oral medication or have needle phobia.

Oral semaglutide associated with significantly reduced bodyweight (− 3.3 kg), body mass index (BMI) (– 0.9 kg/m2), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (− 11 mmol/mol), and total cholesterol (− 0.4 mmol/l) by 3–6 months follow-up. At 6–12 months, there was a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (− 7.0 mmHg), in addition to sustained reductions in other metabolic parameters.

Why this rating

Real-world observational study with no control group and relatively small sample size (n=76), limiting causal inference compared to RCTs.
