In men with metabolic syndrome, a 12-week lifestyle intervention increases circulating BDNF, and this increase correlates with reduced depressive symptoms, whereas body weight reduction alone does not predict depression improvement.
For men with metabolic syndrome, lifestyle changes improve depression, but only if they successfully raise BDNF levels. Simply losing weight without raising BDNF will not improve your mood. Focus on the lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) that boost BDNF, rather than just the scale.
Zung SDS only significantly improved in men with increased fasting BDNF levels after a lifestyle intervention... The increased percentage of BDNF was inversely correlated with the change in Zung SDS... change in body weight or MetS components were not correlated with Zung SDS.
