A broad-spectrum lifestyle intervention (GEM) focusing on lowering postprandial glucose (PPG) via glycemic load reduction, exercise, and monitoring significantly reduces the predicted 10-year risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in adults with recent-onset type 2 diabetes, whereas conventional weight-loss-focused interventions do not.
If you have type 2 diabetes, focus on lowering your blood sugar spikes after meals (postprandial glucose) rather than just trying to lose weight. Do this by swapping high-glycemic foods (like white bread/rice) for low-glycemic options, aiming for 150 minutes of vigorous activity per week, and monitoring your blood glucose. This approach may significantly lower your 10-year risk of heart disease, which standard weight-loss programs often fail to do.
These secondary analyses suggest that broad-spectrum lifestyle interventions that focus on lowering PPG may lower the risk of future CHD... Compared to participants who received routine care, those using the lifestyle intervention had a significantly greater reduction in 10-year risk for CHD... Conventional T2D lifestyle interventions that focus on weight loss with the intent to lower glycosylated hemoglobin (A1c) have been found not to reduce the occurrence of CHD events.
