Skeletal muscle UCP3 mRNA levels are positively correlated with plasma leptin and insulin concentrations, but this relationship is gender-dependent, remaining significant for insulin only in females.
In healthy women, higher insulin levels are associated with higher UCP3 gene expression in muscles, whereas this link is not observed in men. This suggests that hormonal regulation of metabolic genes is sex-specific. For women, managing insulin sensitivity through diet and exercise may indirectly support muscle metabolic health via UCP3 pathways, whereas for men, other factors like fiber type may be more dominant.
UCP3 mRNA was correlated positively with... plasma leptin (r = 0.454, P = 0.026), and plasma insulin (r = 0.615, P = 0.001)... the relationship between UCP3 mRNA and plasma insulin remained significant for females (M: r = 0.181, P = 0.554; F: r = 0.774, P = 0.005).

- Skeletal muscle UCP3 mRNA expression is primarily determined by the percentage of type I muscle fibers, showing a strong positive correlation (r=0.842), whereas resting energy expenditure and maximum oxygen consumption are not related to UCP3 levels.Good
- Skeletal muscle UCP3 mRNA levels decrease with age in healthy adults, inversely correlating with age (r = -0.411), independent of changes in resting energy expenditure.Good
