Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are the preferred antihypertensive treatments for diabetic patients due to renal protection and lack of adverse metabolic effects.
If you have diabetes and high blood pressure, ask your doctor about ACE inhibitors (ending in -pril) or ARBs (ending in -sartan). These are the preferred medications because they protect your kidneys and eyes, not just your heart. Avoid beta-blockers as a first choice if possible, as they can affect blood sugar. Aim for a blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg.
