Adherence

The transition to fatherhood during young adulthood (ages 19-39) is associated with longitudinal declines in cardiovascular health, specifically characterized by reduced physical activity, increased sedentary behavior, reduced sleep, poor diet quality, and increased body weight.

If you are becoming a first-time father, expect your health metrics to potentially decline due to lifestyle disruptions. Prioritize sleep and simple dietary choices early on, as these are the areas most likely to suffer. Recognize that stress and anxiety are common triggers for poor health behaviors during this period, and plan for them proactively rather than reacting to them.

Why this rating

The paper is a study protocol/rationale describing a prospective longitudinal study; it cites prior observational studies showing trends but does not yet present the primary longitudinal data from the Dad Bod Study itself.
