Combination anti-obesity medications (AOMs) are more effective than monotherapy for treating weight regain after bariatric surgery, with patients prescribed three or more AOMs losing significantly more weight than those on one.
If you have regained weight after bariatric surgery, taking just one weight-loss medication may not be enough. This study suggests that using a combination of anti-obesity medications, along with lifestyle changes, leads to significantly greater weight loss than using a single medication. Talk to your doctor about whether a combination approach is right for you, keeping in mind that access and cost can be barriers.
At 12 months, individuals prescribed 3 or more AOMs lost more weight than those prescribed one (−14.5 ± 9.0 kg vs. −4.9 ± 5.7 kg, p < 0.05)
Why this rating
Retrospective chart review, small sample size (N=44), no control group, potential attrition bias.

- Initial treatment for type 2 diabetes should be a combination of metformin and either an SGLT-2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist to achieve cardiorenal protection, rather than monotherapy or older agents like sulfonylureas.Strong
- For patients with specific monogenic obesity syndromes (leptin deficiency, POMC/PCSK1/LEPR mutations), targeted pharmacotherapy (recombinant leptin or setmelanotide) is highly effective and should be prioritized, unlike in polygenic obesity.Strong
- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
