Fasting plasma ghrelin concentrations are significantly decreased in human obesity compared to lean individuals, contradicting the hypothesis that elevated ghrelin drives obesity.
This research suggests that simply having high ghrelin is not the driver of obesity; in fact, obese individuals often have lower levels. This challenges the idea that 'fixing' ghrelin by increasing it would help, as the body may have downregulated it in response to excess energy. Future weight loss strategies may need to address why ghrelin remains suppressed or how to normalize its regulation, rather than just suppressing it further.
Contrary to our hypothesis, however, obese subjects have lower plasma concentrations of the adipogenic hormone ghrelin than age-matched lean control subjects.
