Adherence
Combining behavioral counseling with smartphone-based self-monitoring leads to greater weight loss than counseling alone or smartphone self-monitoring alone.
To lose more weight, combine regular check-ins with a nutritionist or coach and use a smartphone app to track your food and exercise daily. This combination was more effective than using either method alone in this pilot study.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Participants in the intensive counseling plus self-monitoring smartphone group and less intensive counseling plus self-monitoring smartphone group tended to lose more weight than other groups (5.4 kg and 3.3 kg, resp.).
Why this rating
Pilot study, small sample size (n=68), not powered for statistical significance, though trends are consistent.
