Adherence
Environmental changes (food labeling, portion sizes, physical activity infrastructure) are necessary complements to individual cognitive effort to support healthy weight management.
Seek environments that support your goals: choose workplaces with walking opportunities, restaurants with clear calorie labeling, and communities with walkable infrastructure. Individual effort is harder without these supports.
ModerateQualifiesMEDIUM confidence
In order to combat the growing epidemic we should focus our efforts on providing the knowledge, cognitive skills and incentives for controlling body weight and at the same time begin creating a supportive environment to allow better management of body weight.

More from this paper
- Long-term weight loss maintenance is achieved through high levels of physical activity (approx. 11,210 kJ/week or ~6.5 km brisk walking/day) and dietary restraint, rather than physiological adaptation alone.Good
- In modern environments, maintaining healthy body weight requires substantial conscious cognitive effort because biological instinctual mechanisms (which favor energy conservation and intake) are mismatched with abundant food and low physical activity demands.Moderate

- Regular physical activity (at least 150 minutes/week of moderate-intensity) reduces all-cause and cardiovascular mortality by 20-30% and lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes by 25-35%.Strong
- Increasing physical activity from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one in middle adulthood significantly reduces the risk of coronary events compared to remaining sedentary.Strong
- Resistance exercise is the only intervention capable of consistently restoring muscle function and strength in sarcopenia, partially overcoming age-related anabolic resistance.Strong
