Adherence
Unintentional weight loss is strongly associated with a cluster of negative health behaviors, including higher smoking rates, increased alcohol consumption, lower physical activity, and lower dietary restraint, compared to intentional weight loss.
If you are losing weight without trying, do not assume it is a sign of health. This type of weight loss is often linked to smoking, drinking, and poor diet. Consult a doctor to rule out underlying conditions and address these behavioral risk factors, as unintentional loss may worsen existing health issues.
Compared to intentional weight losers, those who lost their weight unintentionally reported engaging in more negative health behaviors that are related to disease morbidity and mortality.
Why this rating
Cross-sectional observational study with self-reported data and a moderate sample size (n=139), limiting causal inference.
