Weight loss interventions (pharmacological or bariatric) in sarcopenic obesity can improve muscle-specific strength and functional parameters despite absolute muscle mass loss, potentially reversing the sarcopenic obesity diagnosis.

If you are considering weight loss medication for obesity, discuss the potential benefits for muscle function. Even if you lose some muscle mass, your strength and ability to function may improve due to reduced fat in muscles and better metabolism. This can reverse sarcopenic obesity.

One study [48] also reported that improvements in physical function were observed across all age groups... These combined observations indirectly and intriguingly suggest that muscle specific strength could have improved following treatment despite loss of muscle mass [46, 47].

Why this rating

Based on secondary analyses of major trials (STEP-1, SURMOUNT-1) and observational studies, not primary endpoints for muscle gain.
