Selecting initial participants for a social-network-based weight loss intervention based on individual attributes (specifically ability to lose weight or BMI) yields significantly higher total network weight loss than selecting based on network structure (degree, betweenness, or closeness centrality).

If you are designing a weight loss program that uses social influence (like peer support groups), do not just pick the most socially active people to start. Instead, identify individuals who are likely to successfully lose weight (e.g., those with higher BMI or proven ability to lose weight) and start with them. Their success will spread more effectively through the network than if you started with the most connected people who might fail.
