GLP-1 receptor agonists reduce cardiovascular risk and promote weight loss, but they cause a transient increase in heart rate that is independent of sympathetic nervous system activation.
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Wegovy help with weight loss and heart health. They might slightly increase your resting heart rate, but this is a direct effect on the heart's electrical system, not stress, and does not negate the heart benefits.
GoodQualifiesHIGH confidence
Paradoxically, given the relationship between heart rate and mortality, these improvements following therapy contrast with the effect of GLP-1 agonists on heart rate... The increased heart rate following GLP-1 therapy likely does not engage the autonomic nervous system, perhaps explaining this paradox.

- Obesity and weight gain drive regional sympathetic nervous system activation, which initiates and worsens cardiometabolic risk factors including hypertension, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia.Good
- SGLT2 inhibitors reduce blood pressure and cardiovascular risk, potentially through central sympatho-inhibition, but do not necessarily reduce muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans.Good

- Initial treatment for type 2 diabetes should be a combination of metformin and either an SGLT-2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist to achieve cardiorenal protection, rather than monotherapy or older agents like sulfonylureas.Strong
- For patients with specific monogenic obesity syndromes (leptin deficiency, POMC/PCSK1/LEPR mutations), targeted pharmacotherapy (recombinant leptin or setmelanotide) is highly effective and should be prioritized, unlike in polygenic obesity.Strong
- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
