Among obese individuals, frequent or daily alcohol consumption and extra salt intake are independent risk factors for metabolic syndrome, whereas physical inactivity and sugar-sweetened drink consumption do not show statistically significant associations.

If you are obese, managing your weight is crucial, but it is not the only lever. This research suggests that for obese individuals, cutting out daily alcohol and reducing extra salt at the table are critical, specific actions to lower metabolic syndrome risk, potentially more so than just increasing exercise or cutting sugary drinks in this specific demographic.

The central obesity (odds ratio: 10.6, 95% CI: 2.32e48.4) and consumption of frequent or daily alcohol (odds ratio: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.05 e3.59),and extra salt (odds ratio: 3.34, 95% CI: 1.09e10.2) were independent risk factors for MS. The consumption of tobacco, vegetables, sugar-sweetened drinks, physical inactivity, and psychosocial factors had no significant association with MS in obese population.
