High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and high-fructose sweetened beverages adversely affects lipid metabolism, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity, particularly in overweight and obese individuals.
Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages, especially if you are overweight. They spike your blood sugar, worsen your cholesterol, and increase blood pressure. Choose water, unsweetened tea, or whole fruits instead, as whole fruits do not carry the same risks.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Frequent consumption of high fructose-sweetened beverages has been reported to have adverse effects on lipid metabolism, blood pressure and insulin sensitivity, especially in overweight and obese people.
Why this rating
Cited as 'reported' effects, likely from observational or smaller studies, less robust than the RCTs for nuts/rice.

- High consumption of refined cereal grains (white rice/refined wheat) significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes in Asian Indians by elevating dietary glycemic load and contributing to visceral obesity.Good
- Replacing saturated fats with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) from nuts (specifically cashews) improves lipid profiles (increases HDL) and reduces blood pressure in type 2 diabetic patients.Good
