Higher intake of whole grains and fruits is associated with lower total cholesterol, LDL-C, and HDL-C levels in long-term plant-based eaters.
Prioritize whole grains and fruits daily. While the cholesterol-lowering effect is modest, it is a consistent benefit. Do not fear small amounts of less-healthy plant foods (like pasta) if they fit your overall healthy pattern, but be aware they may impact other markers like uric acid.
Individuals who consumed more whole grains and fruits had lower levels of total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) cholesterol.
Why this rating
Cross-sectional study with a relatively homogeneous sample (n=151) and weak correlation coefficients.

- Resistance exercise training combined with sufficient dietary protein intake acts synergistically to maximize skeletal muscle hypertrophy, with protein intake saturating around 1.6 g/kg/day for general populations and potentially requiring 2.0-2.2 g/kg/day for resistance-trained individuals.Strong
- Trans fats should be completely eliminated from the diet, as they increase LDL cholesterol, decrease HDL cholesterol, and are directly associated with increased coronary risk.Strong
