Adherence
Tailoring type 2 diabetes lifestyle interventions (Medical Nutrition Therapy, in-person groups, or telephone groups) to patient preferences regarding learning style, schedule, and accountability improves engagement and adherence.
Do not force a single delivery format on all diabetic patients. Assess their preference for learning (social vs. individual), schedule flexibility, and need for accountability. Offer Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for those needing flexibility and one-on-one accountability, telephone groups for those wanting peer support without travel, and in-person groups for those who value face-to-face interaction and structure. Matching the format to the patient's lifestyle increases the likelihood of sustained participation.
These findings demonstrate the importance of having a variety of nutrition and lifestyle treatment options available to meet the needs of people with type 2 diabetes.
Why this rating
Qualitative study of patient perceptions (n=57) prior to a trial; does not measure clinical outcomes like HbA1c or weight loss directly.
