Adherence

Integrative Health Coaching (IHC) empowers patients to sustain lifestyle changes by utilizing a concordant communication style focused on patient-originated goals, rather than using a prescriptive, expert-led educational model.

To sustain lifestyle changes, shift from seeking external directives to internal goal-setting. Work with a coach or provider who uses a 'concordant' style: they ask open-ended questions, help you reframe barriers without judgment, and support you in setting your own SMART goals. This builds self-efficacy and ownership, which are critical for long-term adherence, unlike prescriptive advice which often leads to dependency or resistance.

ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
In IHC, health coaches do not direct with prefabricated education based on the patient’s presenting problem; rather, they use a concordant style of communication. The major tenets of the health coaching process are patient-centeredness and patient control focused around patient-originated health goals that guide the work within a supportive coaching partnership.
