Higher visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume is more strongly associated with adverse metabolic risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome) than subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and VAT provides significant risk prediction above and beyond standard anthropometric measures like BMI and waist circumference.

If you are concerned about metabolic health, standard weight and waist measurements may not tell the whole story. Visceral fat (fat around organs) is a more dangerous driver of risk than subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin). While you cannot easily measure visceral fat at home, maintaining a healthy weight and active lifestyle helps reduce it. If you have risk factors despite a 'normal' waist, deeper assessment of fat distribution might be relevant.
