Habitually sleeping 5 hours or less per night significantly increases the risk of developing hypertension in adults aged 32-59, independent of obesity and diabetes.
If you are between 32 and 59 years old, consistently sleeping 5 hours or less a night puts you at double the risk of developing high blood pressure compared to sleeping 7-8 hours. This risk exists even if you are not overweight or diabetic. Prioritize getting 7-8 hours of sleep to protect your cardiovascular health.

Sleep durations of ≤5 hours per night were associated with a significantly increased risk of hypertension (hazard ratio, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.58 to 2.79) in subjects between the ages of 32 and 59 years... The increased risk continued to be significant after controlling for obesity and diabetes, which was consistent with the hypothesis that these variables would act as partial mediators.
