The preventive effect of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes is significantly influenced by the presence of impaired fasting glucose, but not by baseline BMI.
For obese patients considering surgery, having impaired fasting glucose is a strong indicator that they will benefit from the procedure in terms of diabetes prevention, regardless of their specific BMI.
