Short sleep duration (5-6 hours) is associated with significantly lower plasma leptin levels than predicted by fat mass, which mediates the association between short sleep and increased adiposity.

If you are struggling with weight management, prioritize getting 7-8 hours of sleep. This study suggests that sleeping less (5-6 hours) lowers your leptin (satiety hormone) levels below what your body fat would predict, potentially driving higher food intake and weight gain. Fixing sleep duration may be a necessary step before other interventions work effectively.
