A higher Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) index is independently associated with an increased incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD), coronary artery disease (CAD), and stroke in individuals without baseline ASCVD.
If you are getting standard blood work, ask for your fasting glucose and triglyceride levels. You can calculate your TyG index using the formula: ln[triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting plasma glucose (mg/dL) / 2]. A higher result indicates higher insulin resistance and a statistically higher risk for heart disease and stroke, even if your cholesterol looks normal. Discuss this with your doctor as part of a broader cardiovascular risk assessment.
A higher TyG index may be independently associated with a higher incidence of ASCVDs, CAD, and stroke in people without ASCVDs at baseline.
Why this rating
Meta-analysis of 8 large cohort studies (5.7 million participants) with consistent hazard ratios, though heterogeneity was noted.

- Initial treatment for type 2 diabetes should be a combination of metformin and either an SGLT-2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist to achieve cardiorenal protection, rather than monotherapy or older agents like sulfonylureas.Strong
- For patients with specific monogenic obesity syndromes (leptin deficiency, POMC/PCSK1/LEPR mutations), targeted pharmacotherapy (recombinant leptin or setmelanotide) is highly effective and should be prioritized, unlike in polygenic obesity.Strong
- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
