Prepregnancy consumption of high dietary fiber (specifically cereal and fruit) and low dietary glycemic load is associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
To lower your risk of gestational diabetes before and during pregnancy, prioritize foods high in fiber, specifically from cereal (whole grains) and fruit sources, while minimizing foods that cause rapid spikes in blood sugar (high glycemic load). Aim for at least 10g more of total fiber or 5g more of cereal/fruit fiber per day as part of your pre-pregnancy diet.
These findings suggested that prepregnancy diet might be associated with women’s GDM risk. In particular, diet with low fiber and high glycemic load was associated with an increased risk.
Why this rating
Large prospective cohort (N=13,110), long follow-up (8 years), validated outcomes, though self-reported dietary data introduces potential measurement error.
