Maternal 1-hour glucose levels during pregnancy are specifically associated with an increased risk of childhood prehypertension or hypertension, independent of other glucose measures.
If a mother has a high 1-hour glucose level during her pregnancy, her child may be at a higher risk for high blood pressure in childhood. This highlights the importance of monitoring blood pressure in children born to mothers with elevated 1-hour glucose levels, even if their fasting glucose was normal.
The maternal 1-h PG level also was associated with increased odds of the offspring having prehypertension or hypertension.
Why this rating
The association was only significant for 1-hour glucose, and the authors note the low prevalence of hypertension in this young age group may have limited power.
