Substituting sedentary time with low-intensity physical activity (standing and walking) improves insulin sensitivity and plasma lipid profiles more effectively than substituting the same time with moderate-to-vigorous exercise (cycling), provided total daily energy expenditure is held constant.
If you have a sedentary job, doing one hour of intense gym work is not enough to protect your metabolic health. You must break up your sitting time throughout the day. Standing and walking for several hours (e.g., 6 hours total) provides better insulin and lipid benefits than one hour of cycling, even if both burn the same amount of energy. Prioritize non-sitting time over exercise intensity.
Reducing inactivity by increasing the time spent walking/standing is more effective than one hour of physical exercise, when energy expenditure is kept constant.
Why this rating
Randomized crossover design with strict control of energy expenditure and diet, though limited by short duration (4 days) and small sample size (n=18).
