Adherence
Using a sociable robotic weight loss coach significantly increases long-term behavioral adherence (tracking duration) compared to computer-based or paper-based tracking systems, without necessarily producing superior short-term weight loss.
To stick with a weight loss plan longer, use a tool that feels socially engaging. This study suggests that a robot coach that talks to you, tracks your progress, and builds a relationship helps you keep going for months longer than a simple paper log or a silent computer program. The key is the social connection, not just the data entry.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Results show that participants track their calorie consumption and exercise for nearly twice as long when using the robot than with the other methods... Participants with a robot used their system on average 50.6 days... while participants with a computer used their system for 36.2 days on average, and participants with a paper log reached an average of 26.7 days.
Why this rating
Randomized controlled trial with a small sample size (N=45) and short duration (6 weeks), limiting generalizability.
