Adherence
Earlier physical activity, particularly competitive or recreational sport participation, is a key determinant of maintaining physical activity and reducing healthcare needs in old age.
Maintain physical activity from youth into old age. Early sport participation predicts better health outcomes and reduced hospital care in late life. For older adults, leveraging past active identities can help maintain activity.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Earlier physical activity seems to be the most important determinant, along with gender, in old age. For men and women, self-reported competitive sport participation from as early as 10–19 years of age was a significant predictor of maintaining physical activity in old age regardless of chronic conditions.
Why this rating
Based on longitudinal studies showing strong correlations between early sport and late-life activity/healthcare use.
