Circadian misalignment from shift work or forced desynchronization causes insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance, independent of total sleep time.

If you work shifts, try to eat during your 'day' (even if it's night) and sleep during your 'night' (even if it's day). Aligning food intake with your internal clock reduces insulin resistance.
