Bariatric surgery, particularly malabsorptive and mixed procedures like Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion, leads to significant resolution or improvement of type 2 diabetes, often independent of or preceding significant weight loss.

Surgery can put type 2 diabetes into remission for many patients, sometimes before significant weight loss occurs, due to hormonal changes in the gut.
