Large-scale precision nutrition interventions targeting individual behavioral modification are unlikely to reduce obesity at a population level because they ignore the structural and environmental causes of incidence.
Do not rely solely on personalized diet apps or genetic testing to solve obesity. These tools focus on individual behavior, which is heavily constrained by your environment (food availability, cost, marketing). To effectively manage weight, you must combine personalized advice with structural changes to your environment, such as advocating for policy changes or modifying your immediate food access, rather than expecting data-driven advice alone to overcome an obesogenic environment.
We argue that large-scale PN, if taken alone, might be of limited interest from a public health perspective... large-scale PN can only address some individual causes of obesity (causes of cases)... This individual-centred approach is likely to have a small impact on the distribution of obesity at a population level because it ignores the population causes of obesity (causes of incidence).
