Pandemic-related lockdown measures and loss of structure exacerbate eating disorder symptoms, specifically increasing dietary restriction in anorexia nervosa and binge-eating urges in bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

If you have an eating disorder, the removal of daily structure (meals, therapy, exercise) is a major trigger for symptom worsening. To mitigate this, you must proactively recreate external structures: schedule meals, maintain therapy contact (even via telehealth), and establish a daily routine, as the absence of these is directly linked to increased restriction or bingeing.

Individuals with anorexia nervosa (US 62% of sample; NL 69%) reported increased restriction and fears about being able to find foods consistent with their meal plan. Individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder (US 30% of sample; NL 15%) reported increases in their binge-eating episodes and urges to binge.
