Hormonal
Probiotic intake improves glucose homeostasis (reducing fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin, and HOMA-IR) and liver enzymes (ALAT, ASAT) in subjects with Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), respectively.
If you have Type 2 Diabetes or Fatty Liver Disease, taking multispecies probiotics (containing Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium strains) daily may help slightly lower your blood sugar, insulin levels, and liver enzymes. However, because these findings are heavily based on studies from Iran, the results may not apply universally. Continue your prescribed medications and consult your doctor before adding probiotics.
In type 2 diabetics, probiotics reduced fasting glucose... glycated haemoglobin... insulin... and homeostatic model of insulin resistance... In subjects with fatty liver diseases, probiotics reduced alanine... and aspartate aminotransferases
Why this rating
Meta-analysis of RCTs, but the results are heavily influenced by 43 trials from a single country (Iran), limiting generalizability.

- Initial treatment for type 2 diabetes should be a combination of metformin and either an SGLT-2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist to achieve cardiorenal protection, rather than monotherapy or older agents like sulfonylureas.Strong
- For patients with specific monogenic obesity syndromes (leptin deficiency, POMC/PCSK1/LEPR mutations), targeted pharmacotherapy (recombinant leptin or setmelanotide) is highly effective and should be prioritized, unlike in polygenic obesity.Strong
- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
