Hormonal

Ingested proteins suppress the orexigenic hormone ghrelin more strongly and sustainably than isocaloric carbohydrates or lipids, while carbohydrates induce a biphasic response with a late-phase rebound above baseline.

To manage hunger and support weight loss, prioritize protein over carbohydrates and fats in your meals. Protein provides the strongest and most sustained suppression of the hunger hormone ghrelin. Be aware that carbohydrates, while suppressing ghrelin initially, can cause a 'rebound' effect hours later, potentially triggering hunger and overeating. Lipids are the least effective at suppressing ghrelin.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
the rank order for magnitude of suppression was protein more than carbohydrate more than lipid... In the subsequent 3 h, there was a marked rebound above preprandial values of acyl and total ghrelin after carbohydrate ingestion alone.

Why this rating

Randomized, within-subjects cross-over study with rigorous controls (isocaloric, isovolemic), though small sample size (n=16).
