If you experience muscle pain or weakness while taking statins, it may not be 'in your head' but a specific biological response involving muscle breakdown proteins (atrogin-1). Do not simply stop the medication without consulting your doctor. Collectively, our human, animal, and in vitro findings shed light on the molecular mechanism of statin-induced myopathy and suggest that atrogin-1 may be a critical mediator of the muscle damage induced by statins.
