Low-intensity resistance exercise (<50% 1RM) combined with slow movement and tonic force generation produces muscle hypertrophy and strength gains equivalent to high-intensity resistance exercise (~80% 1RM).
To build muscle without lifting heavy weights, use a weight you can lift for 8 repetitions (approx 50% of your max). Perform each repetition slowly: 3 seconds lowering, 3 seconds lifting, and hold the fully extended position for 1 second without relaxing. Do 3 sets, 3 times a week. This creates metabolic stress that triggers growth similar to heavy lifting.
The present study showed an increase in muscular size and concomitant increase in muscular strength after a 12-wk low-intensity (<50% 1RM) resistance exercise training with slow movement and tonic force generation (LST). The gains in muscular size and strength were similar to those after a high-intensity (<80% 1RM) exercise training with normal speed (HN)...
Why this rating
Randomized controlled trial with matched groups, objective MRI measurements, and statistical significance, though sample size is small (n=8 per group).
