Hormonal

The AMPKα1 isoform plays a critical role in stimulating anabolism and regulating satellite cell dynamics during muscle regeneration, distinct from the catabolic role of AMPKα2.

Muscle repair after injury relies on specific molecular signals (AMPKα1) that are different from those that limit growth during stress. While general AMPK activation can hinder growth, the specific activation of the α1 isoform is necessary for stem cells to repair damage. This suggests that recovery protocols should support, not suppress, this specific signaling pathway.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Together, the current data indicate that AMPK does play an important role in regulating muscle mass and regeneration, with AMPKα1 playing a prominent role in stimulating anabolism and in regulating satellite cell dynamics during regeneration, and AMPKα2 playing a potentially more important role in regulating muscle degradation during atrophy.
