Supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA) reduces systemic inflammation and improves cardiovascular risk profiles in patients with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

For individuals with established cardiovascular disease or high risk (e.g., post-heart attack, metabolic syndrome), incorporating omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) through diet (fatty fish) or supplementation is strongly supported by evidence to reduce mortality and cardiovascular events. The mechanism involves lowering inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α) and improving adipokine profiles (increasing adiponectin). However, for preventing atrial fibrillation recurrence, high-dose supplementation (4g/day) has not shown benefit in recent trials, and moderate intake may be optimal for general AF risk reduction.
