Low childhood socioeconomic status (CSES) is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and metabolic disturbances in adulthood, an association that persists even after adjusting for adult SES and obesity.
Your early life environment matters for your long-term metabolic health. If you grew up in a low-SES household, you may face higher risks for type 2 diabetes and metabolic issues later in life, independent of your current status. This doesn't mean you are destined for poor health, but it highlights the importance of proactive metabolic monitoring and addressing lifestyle factors early, as the 'head start' or 'head wind' from childhood can have lasting effects.
Eight out of ten studies indicated that low parental status was associated with type 2 diabetes incidence or the development of metabolic abnormalities. Adjustment for adult SES and obesity tended to attenuate the childhood SES-attributable risk but the association remained.
