The protective effect of whole-grain/cereal fiber against cardiovascular disease and diabetes may be partially due to increased vegetable protein content (higher protein-to-carbohydrate ratio) and other whole-grain components, rather than fiber alone.
When choosing whole grains, look for options with higher protein content (like wheat bran or specific whole-grain products). The health benefits of whole grains may come from a combination of fiber and protein, not just fiber alone.
Hence we suggest that the protective effect of fibre may also be due to increased vegetable protein content, which may act directly to reduce clotting factors and oxidized LDL-cholesterol levels.
Why this rating
Suggested by epidemiological data and some controlled studies (e.g., Stilling et al. 1999), but the paper states the mechanism of insoluble fiber remains 'obscure' and this is a hypothesis.
