Elderly patients with an increased percentage of adipose tissue have considerably more chronic systemic inflammation than elderly subjects with normal body mass indexes (BMIs). The explanation for this might be the ability of the adipose tissue to secrete a number of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), such as resistin, which are capable of initiating and maintaining a state of chronic inflammation and insulin resistance [24,25].
