Macro partitioning

Post-exercise nutrient timing may be beneficial for individuals training in a fasted state or those with long gaps (>3-4 hours) between their last meal and exercise.

If you train first thing in the morning before eating breakfast, or if it has been 4+ hours since your last meal, eat a protein-rich meal (25-40g) as soon as possible after your workout. This helps reverse the catabolic state caused by training on an empty stomach.

ModerateConditionalMEDIUM confidence
when training is initiated more than ~3–4 hours after the preceding meal, the classical recommendation to consume protein (at least 25 g) as soon as possible seems warranted in order to reverse the catabolic state.

Why this rating

Based on theoretical mechanisms and acute studies, but chronic data is mixed.
