Lorcaserin, a selective 5-HT2C receptor agonist, produces significant, dose-dependent weight loss in obese adults without the need for concurrent diet or exercise modifications.
Lorcaserin is a prescription medication that activates specific brain receptors to reduce appetite. In this 12-week study, obese adults lost an average of 3.6 kg on the highest dose without changing their diet or exercise habits. It is not a standalone solution but a tool to help regulate hunger signals.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Lorcaserin was associated with progressive weight loss of 1.8 kg, 2.6 kg, and 3.6 kg at 10 mg q.d., 15 mg q.d., and 10 mg b.i.d., respectively, compared to placebo weight loss of 0.3 kg (P < 0.001 for each group)... The weight loss in lorcaserin-treated patients was achieved without the prescription of concurrent calorie restriction or increased physical activity.
Why this rating
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 469 participants, though limited to 12 weeks.
