Dietary administration of Conjugated Linoleic Acids (CLA), specifically the trans-10,cis-12 isomer, induces hepatic steatosis by stimulating de novo lipogenesis and increasing plasma insulin.
Be cautious with CLA supplements. While they may help reduce body fat, they can also cause fatty liver and increase insulin levels in animal studies. The potential liver damage may outweigh the fat loss benefits.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Several studies (Table 2) suggested that de novo fatty acid synthesis may play a role in the onset of hepatic steatosis produced by CLA administration.

- High-fat diets rich in saturated fatty acids (SFA) and Conjugated Linoleic Acids (CLA) induce hepatic steatosis, whereas diets rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) inhibit hepatic lipogenesis and prevent steatosis.Good
- Dietary supplementation with krill oil or pine nut oil prevents or reverses hepatic steatosis by inhibiting hepatic de novo lipogenesis and enhancing fatty acid oxidation.Moderate
