In patients with NAFLD, the presence of metabolic syndrome is associated with higher histologic severity (steatosis, NASH activity, global score) and a dietary pattern characterized by higher carbohydrate and lower fat intake compared to those without metabolic syndrome.
If you have NAFLD and metabolic syndrome, your liver disease severity is linked to your specific diet composition, not just total calories. Specifically, higher carbohydrate and lower fat intake is associated with worse liver inflammation and fat accumulation. While this study doesn't prescribe a specific diet, it suggests that focusing on reducing carbohydrate intake relative to fat, alongside managing metabolic health, may be a relevant strategy to discuss with your healthcare provider.
