Significant weight gain during early adulthood (ages 14 to 31) is a primary risk factor for the development of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and its associated metabolic disturbances (dyslipidemia, hyperandrogenemia) by late adulthood.

Increase of BMI between ages 14 and 31, but not between 31 and 46, was greater in women with isolated OA (P(cid:2).006), OA(cid:3)H (P(cid:2).001) and diagnosis of PCOS (P(cid:2).001) compared with controls.
