In patients with type 2 diabetes, the addition of orlistat to a behavioral weight loss intervention yields significantly greater improvements in insulin sensitivity and reductions in plasma free fatty acids (FFA) compared to behavioral intervention alone, despite achieving equivalent total weight loss.
If you have type 2 diabetes and are overweight, adding orlistat (120mg with meals) to a standard weight loss program (diet and exercise) can improve your body's sensitivity to insulin better than diet and exercise alone. This happens because orlistat helps lower free fatty acids in your blood, which directly reduces insulin resistance, even if you lose the same amount of weight as someone not taking the drug.
At equivalent weight loss, conjunctive use of orlistat resulted in greater improvement in FFA levels and IS.
