Average daily sleep duration exhibits a J-shaped association with hypertension, major depressive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder, where both short (5h) and long (10h) durations increase risk compared to the median (6.8h).
Aim for approximately 7 hours of sleep per night. Both sleeping significantly less (5 hours) or significantly more (10 hours) is associated with higher risks of hypertension, depression, and anxiety. We identified significant nonlinear, J-shaped relationships between average daily sleep duration and hypertension (P for nonlinearity = 0.003), major depressive disorder (P < 0.001) and generalized anxiety disorder (P < 0.001)... Participants who had an average daily sleep duration of 5 h had 29% increased risk of hypertension... 64% increased risk of major depressive disorder... and 46% increased risk of generalized anxiety disorder... Participants with an average daily sleep duration of 10 h had 61% increased risk of hypertension... 163% increased risk of major depressive disorder... and 130% increased risk of generalized anxiety disorder
