Bariatric surgery can yield significant long-term improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors (fasting glucose, blood pressure, triglycerides, medication reduction) even in patients who fail to achieve substantial weight loss (defined as <25% excess weight loss).
If you undergo bariatric surgery and do not lose a large amount of weight, do not assume the procedure has failed. Significant improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure, and medication needs are still possible due to the physiological changes the surgery induces, not just the weight loss. Monitor your metabolic markers closely regardless of the scale.
A modest surgical weight loss in the range of 5–10% of initial weight was associated with significant improvement in cardiometabolic risk factors of morbidly obese diabetes patients.
